You can count on seeing interesting art in New York's Chelsea gallery district. When Bill and I read that Robert Polidori was showing new work we knew it would be a highlight of our visit.
The centrepiece of his current show at Paul Kasmin Gallery is an ink-jet print called 60 Feet Road. The print is almost 16 feet long. It is a picture of a single street in India made out of 22 eight by ten inch photographic plates photoshopped into one image.
Polidori told Martin C. Pedersen in an interview for the architectural website Common Edge "You're forced to get close to it, and physically follow it's length by walking, just as I had to do when I was there."
It took Polidori four hours to document the entire street,
so four hours pass
from one end of the print to the other.
The rear of the gallery features photographs taken at the Hotel Petra in Beirut, abandoned in 1992 and untouched until Polidori began to document it in 2010.
Polidori's books are published by Steidl in Germany -- arguably the best photobook publisher in the world. Bill and I ordered 60 Feet Road after we left the gallery. Just got notice that it is on the way.
Whether you call it a giclee print or an inkjet print, I don't consider it an original work of art!
